مكتبة نوبل 1912 جيرهارت هاوبتمن بهر نظر وأمتع قراءه كناقد، صحفي، ناشر وروائي، شاعر، كاتب مسرحي، كاتب رحلات، وكاتب قصة قصيرة. نشر أول رواية له ‘زهرة الربيع’ 1892. كانت تصويراً واضحاً للحياة بين البوهيميين. تمتاز مسرحياته بقوة البناء وروح الفكاهة والمسرح، كما أدخل نوعاً جديداً من الشخصيات المسرحية المرحة على فن الكوميديا الألمانية. وصف الأحوال الإجتماعية الألمانية في مسرحياته، وهي تدل على نظرته النافذة وعمق فهمه للمشاعر النفسية في إطار المسرح الساخر. يعده الكثيرون أعظم كتاب ألمانيا. بعد عدة محاولات مبكرة، تحول هاوبتمن إلى أسلوب المدرسة الطبيعية أو المغالية والواقعية، فكتب مسرحية ‘قبل الفجر’ 1889 أتبعها بمسرحية ‘حيوات موحشة’ 1891، ومأساته الشهيرة ‘النساجون’ 1892. هجر المذهب الطبيعي في مسرحيته ‘هانيله’ 1893 التي يتبع فيها نمطاً حالماً ويستخدم أسلوباً رومانسياً. يظهر هذا الأسلوب الجديد وحده في أشهر مسرحياته ‘الناقوس الغريق’ 1897، غير أن الواقعية تعود فتظهر في تراجيديتيه ‘دريمان هنشل’ 1899، و ‘روز بيرند’ 1903، وتعدان من أعظم المسرحيات في الأدب الألماني الحديث، وكان في شيخوخته من أنصار النازية.
