ولدت كاثرين مانسفيلد (اسمها بالأصل كاثلين بوشامب موراي) عام 1888 في ولنغتون، عاصمة نيوزيلاندا، وماتت في منطقة فونتبلو الفرنسية عام 1923. قدمت إلى إنكلترا من أجل متابعة دراستها، واستقرت هناك منذ عام 1908. نشرت أولى كتاباتها في «العصر الجديد» التي كانت تكاتبها بانتظام. ثم نشرت في عام 1911 مجموعتها القصصية الأولى «في بنسيون ألماني». وفي عام 1912 أخذت تكاتب «إيقاع» التي كانت يرأس تحريرها جون ميدلتون موراي الذي تزوجها فيما بعد. كانت كتاباتها في السنوات التالية يغلب عليها التجريب، غير أن ما نشرته في عام 1916 أظهر أنها قد أصبحت ذات صوت متميز ككاتبة قصصية حديثة. أصيبت بالسل عام 1917، ومنذ ذلك الوقت عاشت حياة متنقلة بحثاً عن الشفاء. ولم تنشر مجموعتها الثانية «سعادة تامة» إلا في عام 1921. أما مجموعتها الثالثة «حفلة في الحديقة» فقد ظهرت في العام التالي، وكانت آخر ما نُشر لها في حياتها. بعد وفاتها نُشرت مجموعتان لها هما «عش الحمام» في عام 1923، و«شيء صبياني» في عام 1924. وفيما بعد نشر لها زوجها «يوميات» (1927)، و«رسائل» (1928)، و«سجل القصاصات» (1940). وفي عام 1945 نشرت دار كونستابل أعمالها القصصية الكاملة، ثم أعادت نشرها دار بنجوين عام 1981. ضمَّ هذا الكتاب ثلاثاً وسبعين قصة، وخمس عشرة قصة غير منتهية.
